Dealan Renn
Dealan Renn
Rank: Ensign (O-1)
Position: Former Acting Assistant Operations Officer
Appearance
Species: Trill (unjoined)
Gender: Male
Born: 2363
Place of Birth: San Francisco, Earth
Hair: Brown
Eyes: Brown
Height: 6'2"
Very tall, fairly slim and somewhat lanky, Dealan is not exactly a striking person. There are some features which others have found attractive but his awkward nature tends to chase most away. He has deep, large brown eyes that shine from beneath a thick mop of wavy brown hair and a half-smile that seems permanently frozen to his pale features. Trill spots trickle down from each side of his head to the tips of his toes on both feet, however he is not joined with a symbiont and doesn't ever plan to be.
Personality
Dealan is very soft-spoken and has a quiet and shy nature, usually prompting him to avoid most large social gatherings. He is friendly and usually fairly happy when pushed into a situation with others yet in his free time he prefers to keep to himself, reserved and confident in his own-doings. He is unnaturally clumsy and, with a little insecurity tugging at him, tends to try almost too hard not to make a fool of himself. As an emotional individual who rarely finds time for socialising, he views himself as a poet and appreciates fine literature and art, writing down his own feelings and views on life whenever he finds the time to himself.
On duty, his persona is elevated slightly. As an officer, Dealan makes for a good leader and with his relaxed attitude and humble approach he rarely causes disturbance among his subordinates or superiors. He does not flap in crisis and takes pride in each level of his operational work, adoring the computer monitoring and system re-routes that others in his career line tend to avoid. He believes in Starfleet and the Federation from the Prime Directive to the Chain of Command - in Dealan's eyes, they couldn't be more inspiring.
He is commonly referred to as "Deal" for short.
History
Dealan was born on Earth, outwith San Francisco, where his father was based with Starfleet HQ. Before he was a year old his parents legally seperated and his mother took he and his older sister back to Trill where the entire family were re-united with their homeworld and society.
The children were educated privately at home for their early years until Seara, nearing her teenage life, demanded they both be sent through the public schooling system. Their mother agreed and both children, despite young Dealan's fears and protests, were packed off to their local educational facilities and forced to integrate more with their friends.
As he grew, Dealan found difficulty in emerging from his shell. He spent most of his schooldays working and studying and avoiding the larger groups in the playground. He had a strong eye for maths and science which he took into his elder teenage years and transformed into physics and computing. Throughout his childhood, his father was his escape and his mother a domineering figure who tried to push him into objectives he hated. Commander Saran frequently returned to Trill between semesters to spend time with his children, his connection to Dealan was strong and they bonded well. To Dealan - Adal was an object of wonder who had flown ships and travelled to the deeper realms of space, enjoying each moment. His father knew how to escape and even as the young Trill completed school, he longed for the active duty of Starfleet.
However, his mother protested and in Dealan's mind his mother's word was final. She would often claim that he should become more like his sister, Seara had completed her training through the Ministry of Science and had recently been picked by the Symbiosis Commission for joining with the symbiont Xaf who was in need of a new host. After gaining her second degree and completing her doctorate she was finally granted permission and joined. She became an entirely new and independent person, striving on knowledge and research. Dealan disliked his 'new' sister and found nothing but discouragement from her change.
Now in his second year of University schooling, systemic computer science as a major, he applied to the Symbiosis Commission himself with his mother pressuring him. They reluctantly accepted and frequently he met with Obav Fale, another joined Trill, who would monitor his daily life and keep track on his knowledge of Trill society and scientific endeavours. It was incredibly stressful, the shy and withdrawn Dealan found difficulty in maintaining himself to the ideals that Obav required before he would release his symbiont to him. Regardless, the old man appeared to find faith and signed off to the commission that the young Renn man should be the next host for Fale.
Unfortunately for the commission, Dealan left Trill for good that very night. Whilst his mother slept (Seara was now teaching on Betazed) he packed an overnight kitbag, marked his personal items for transport storage, gathered his remaining UFP credits and within the hour was on a civillian crusier out of the system and into a different sector.
For a year or so he planet-hopped. Time was spent on Bajor where he worked as a staffer in a local hotel, he found a bar job in Risa as well as love with a local girl named Sopheal. Soon his interest died and their fiery relationship ended. Vulcan taught him humility and meditation and other such acts of self-healing and so on until he reached his final destination; Earth. The multicultural society and way of life was incredibly different from that of wise and aged Trill where everyone believed only in science and education. He toured the planet, sleeping if he could afford it and working throughout the day.
Eventually, however, he found his final stop at his father's home on the San Fransisco Starfleet Academy Campus. Their relationship blossomed and soon, with his father's command recommendation, he was taking the aptitude testing for the academy and preparing to join under the Operations, Systems and Analysis major. The very next semester he was enrolled as Cadet Renn and began his first steps into the life he had dreamed of since boyhood.
