The Intelligence Department is responsible for gathering and deciphering information and presenting it in a way that a Commanding Officer can understand. The information can come from a variety of sources including starship logs, operatives and contacts. The Intelligence Department is part of Starfleet Intelligence (SFI) and is under the jurisdiction of the Head of SFI and Starfleet Command. Intelligence personnel wear grey.
The Chief Intelligence Officer is responsible for gathering and organizing information and/or intelligence and presenting it to those with a need to know. They are a department head and report directly to the CO or XO, though they may have reports for the other department heads. They offer advice on ship operations especially in times of conflict or covert operations or when facing the unknown. They are responsible for maintaining a network of contacts to gain that information, whether they be Starfleet assets or outside sources. They are the information specialists. They are expert in all aspects of the intel team.
The Assistant Chief Intelligence Officer assists the Chief Intelligence Officer in the gathering of intelligence and/or information. Assumes the responsibilities of Chief Intelligence Officer in times of absence or incapacity of that officer. Oversees intelligence projects when the CIO is unable to provide direct supervision. They have a familiarity in all aspects of the intel team. They are also responsible for organizing the collection of Intelligence in all forms. Knowing the limits of all intelligence gathering platforms they can direct the best way to gain a specific type of information. They train and supervise Intelligence crewmen in departmental operations, repairs, and protocols; maintain duty assignments for all Intelligence personnel; and is qualified to temporarily act as Chief Intelligence Officer if so ordered. The Collections Manager reports to the Chief Intelligence Officer.
An Crypto/Analysis Specialist is responsible for classifying, encrypting, and thorough analysis of sensitive information. He takes submitted Intelligence reports and runs them through algorithms, checking for keywords that denote mistyped classification and then puts the report into crypto form and sends them through the proper channels of communication to either on board ship consoles or off board to whom ever needs to receive it. They are also responsible for breaking unknown codes. They must also partly organize, partly evaluate reports and presente it to the Chief Intelligence Officer or Assistant Chief Intelligence Officer, who will decide the importance of it. They have to read through all information to perform there duties well.
