Leif Haraldsson is muscular with a solid build. His hair is kept standard length, and always looks tussled. While his body is pale, his legs, arms, and face are lightly tanned from "outdoor" holodeck activities. His body, once riddled with scars and owners tattoo's, is otherwise unblemished thanks to dermal regenerators at the Academy.
Personality
When Leif is in uniform, he puts on a stoic, quiet nature; always obedient to command. He may not be an officer that stands out or does exceptional jobs, but he works diligently and professionally. When Leif is off duty, he spends most of his time alone; either on the holodeck, working out, or reading. He loosens up a little when forced into social settings, and can be quite pleasant -- if a little quiet. Leif usually finds reasons to leave as quickly as he can however and the longer he's forced to socialize in large settings, the more uncomfortable he gets.
Leif suffers from Night Terrors on a nightly basis. He doesn't sleep much and there are usually dark rings around his eyes as a result. Some weeks are better than others, but it's something that has plagued him since leaving the Gokstad settlement. During more depressed periods, Leif usually attends counseling sessions and/or requires sleep medication. This hasn't hindered his job, or at least not enough to be noticed by superiors.
Hobbies and Interests
Leif usually reads, works out, enjoys holo novels...solitary activities. While he doesn't spend much time doing sports, he is a fan of surfing and snowboarding. Leif has an unusual work out routine that involves practicing Agrashi, a form of street style martial arts practiced on Gokstad.
History
Leif Haraldsson was born a bastard child to a prostitute known only as V'alana on the backwater colony, Gokstad Settlement. The colony, set on the furthest edge of Federation space, was writhe with gangs, the homeless, orphans, drug dealers and their addicts. By the time Leif was eight years old, he had learned to beg, pickpocket, and scam people into providing food and money to his mother. At age ten, V'alana was stricken with an illness that claimed her life within months. Leif, like most orphans, became the personal property of V'alana's pimp. To this day, Leif doesn't know his name, having only called him “Sir” for the many years he had known him. Leif would forever refer to him, in secret of course, as Gorgantash; named after the one eyed mythological beast that was part of Gokstad settlements religion. Gorgantash trained Leif in many aspects of the underground trade. He refined his pickpocketing, and aggressive begging techniques. It was Leif's penchant for scams and acting however that prompted Gorgantash to train Leif in the ways of the prostitute trade. At the unfortunate age of twelve, Leif was sold to a particularly ruthless group of pirates. Leif was given the slaver's tattoo, and integrated into the pleasure rooms on board their ship. Leif was taken in by the unusual family consisting of self called whores and drug addicts. He made a home with them and for many years they all looked out for one another. When Leif turned 16, and had begun to bulk up rapidly (as was the normal build of most Gokstad settlement men) Leif was sold into the general slave population on Beta Gryts III. He was circulated for six months before being chosen for heavy labour at an illegal mining operation. Leif never knew where the mine was, and still doesn't, but he does remember the smell. He worked the mine for what he thought must have been over a year. He continued to bulk up and grow strong, which prompted his owners to use him for some of the most grueling of mining tasks. In 2375, three months before his 17th birthday, the Federation led a raid Beta Gryts III, freeing close to two hundred and eighty slaves. Leif was selected early on to be included in rehabilitation programs. It was during this program that Leif met his long-time friend, Dr. Bea Saunders, a counselor for the program. Dr. Bea helped Leif through some of the more difficult transitions and even inspired in him a desire to serve in Starfleet. In 2382, 7 years after starting rehabilitation, Leif sat and passed the entrance exams, with Dr. Bea as his reference. While in the Academy, Leif took a pretty even course load and excelled in both Helm and Operations. Leif graduated at the late age of 28, and promoted to the rank of Ensign. He is currently awaiting transfer orders.
