Species: Human
Gender: Female
Born: 13 May 2360
Place of Birth: Chicago, Earth
Hair: Brown
Eyes: Blue
Height: 5'5"

Serenity is roughly 5'5" tall, with long brown hair, blue eyes and a small sprinkling of freckles on her nose which her father always told her made her the most beautiful girl in the world. However if anyone else made a comment like that she was likely to shrug it off or argue the point.

Personality

Serenity tries to be easygoing, but she is prone to over react in many types of situations. This is simply because she puts all her heart and soul into anything she does. Her naive and trusting nature has sometimes caused pain in her life, but it also serves as one of her best qualities, and makes her an extremely warm and loyal friend.

While she may be a little naive and unsure in her personal life, she is focused and highly skillful behind the helm, letting almost nothing distract her from her piloting duties. She is so passionate about flying that she has a tendency to form an attachment with vessels she serves on, which she believes helps her be the best helmswoman she can be. Other aspects of her job might not get the same dedication though.

History

Serenity Amanda Phillips, or Saph as her friends call her, was born in Chicago, to Malcolm Phillips and Amanda Matthews in the year 2360. She lived in a medium sized apartment in Chicago with her parents for the first five or six years of her life. She still remembers spending her nights out on the roof watching various transports and Federation vessels flying about, and dreaming of one day piloting them herself.

Her father was an engineer with the Federation and often took Serenity with him to see the types of ships he worked on. She would spend most of her week waiting for those days to arrive. There was nothing she loved more than the idea of becoming a pilot or spending time with Malcolm.

In 2365 Malcolm was positioned on a Galaxy Class vessel as a replacement CEO for a minimum of one year. Saph didn't take the news very well. She couldn't stand to be away from her father for that amount of time; she only had a couple of friends and her mother didn't share their interest in flying.

Eventually she accepted the fact that he would be back within a year, and would contact them on an almost daily basis. Before he left, Malcolm gave Serenity an antique telescope that had been in his family for many generations. He showed her the region of space that his vessel would be patrolling so that she could look out and see him whenever she wanted.

Sadly, only a month before he was due to return, a Borg Cube entered Federation space and destroyed many vessels, including the Galaxy Class Malcolm was posted on. Serenity was devastated by the loss of her father and best friend. In fact, his death was one of the main reasons she enrolled in Starfleet; she had made up her mind that the ship would have survived if they had a better pilot behind the controls.

For the next couple of years Serenity and her mother lived alone. They grew much closer than they had been, and enjoyed some very happy years. However Serenity soon learned that her mother needed more companionship than a daughter could provide, when Amanda started dating Benjamin Sterling, a small freighter pilot from San Francisco.

Serenity was cautious at first, but soon came to like Benjamin, and how happy he made her mother. The couple were married in 2370, shortly before the birth of their first son, Tobias. Later that same year, the four of them moved to a larger place in San Francisco, not far from Starfleet headquarters.

The advantage of having a step father in the freight business was that Serenity had easy access to a number of small vessels that she was able to practice piloting for the years before joining the Academy.

In December of 2376, Saph became the proud sister of a newborn girl, Mandy, named after her mother. Having a young brother and sister could be annoying at times, but Serenity loved taking care of them both. When she joined Starfleet Academy in 2378, she was thankful to have them living close enough to visit almost whenever she wanted, although she did know that when she was posted on a ship she may not see them for years at a time.

During her time at the Academy Serenity was in the top two of her classes, she excelled at manual piloting; which she prefers over computer assisted and will use it whenever she has the opportunity. Serenity also studied engineering while at the Academy. At first she found it emotionally difficult to work in the same area as her father, but she knew he would be proud of what she was doing and managed to excel at them as well.

Special Notes

One of Benjamin's freighters that Serenity trained on is an old Klingon model, so she has learnt to read a small amount of the language as well as how to handle the difference in control systems.
