Steven is a big guy, a sign of his many years in academia. He has a slightly pale complexion from years in basements and labs. His grey hair is rather a mess. He likes to think of himself as a more overweight version of Albert Einstein. He has the look of a career scientist, even preferring to wear glasses than to have surgery on his eyes.

Personality

Steven is a difficult person to connect with. He has an arrogance that goes beyond his ability. He has had obvious academic success and is an exceptionally good teacher. However, he has a probem with stupidity. Steven cannot tolerate people he perceives as stupid, which he unfortunately defines as people who disagree with him. He has few friends, those he does have are either colleagues at Oxford University or ex-students. However, he is notoriously unpopular at Oxford as he does not get along well with internal politics and has a tendency to disagree frequently with colleagues. However, he is loved by many of his students. He avoids having conversations in person as he tends to inadvertantly start arguements. Although, he loves to have a good academic debate.

In his personal life Steven is rather flawed. Despite his arrogance he does realise this. He has one close friend, however he only sees him about once a year at an academic conference in San Fransisco as he is the head of Starfleet's science division. There was once a romantic interest for Steven. He fell hard for a girl named Natalie who was one of his students. They did not start a relationship until two years after she had left university but were madly in love, until her death in 2363 when he was 46.

History

Steven was a geeky child, always bright but never interested in any kind of physical activity. He took to education, specifically the sciences and was always reading. He had a good general knowledge of every topic area by the time he entered university but decided to specialise in Stellar Cartography and Stellar Physics.

After obtaining his first degree he entered a small university in Wales as an associate lecturer and began enjoying teaching. At the age of 25 he obtained a Ph.d in physics and moved to Germany to teach in Berlin. It was there that he met Natalie, one of his then students. The two refused to break the university's code of conduct but met again several years later and moved in together.

On a dark winter's night in 2363, after twenty years in Germany, there was a break-in. Natalie was killed in the process and in a fit of rage Steven killed the intruder. Although no charges were made against the scientist he never got over the death of his fiance, or of the life he had taken. By this time Steven had published several books and numerous academic articles, gaining a reputation as a competant scientist. He also had friends in high places having taught the head of Starfleet Science and several Nobel Prize winners. Together these friends helped him in his time of need, getting him a new home and job at Oxford University. This job led to him getting tenure but he was not popular among his colleagues. He did not do enough practical research to settle his bosses nerves. Although an exceptional teacher he was forced into signing on to an expedition, it was not his choice where. He is now considering his options, his next three journal articles are intended to be published in the next month, he is writing a biography of one of his heroes, Michio Kaku, and is considering finding a new job. However, he as a reputation for being smarter than everyone else and giving them all an inferiority complex and thus the job offers are few and far between. However, at this point Steven would take a job teaching children at a refugee camp on Cardassia rather than being on a Starship.
